Consignment is an idea as old as sliced bread, but relatively new in classic boutique form. I read about this unique approach to the clothing business in Entrepreneur magazine and decided Fayetteville, North Carolina needed an upscale resale shop.
The idea finally became a reality when in October 1989, I opened a consignment shop for women and children named Saks Thrift Ave in a small 850 Sq. foot house on the corner of Breezewood and Purdue. By August of 1990, we were bursting at the seams and relocated to 2631 Raeford Road with 1750 Sq. Feet. After a few months in our new location we once again found it necessary to expand. We rented 1/3 of the space next to us at 2631 1/2 to use as the consignment office.
We opened a Second location in April of 1993, in Lumberton, North Carolina, and at that time changed our name to Sacks Consigned Designs. A men's department was incorporated into this location. The Lumberton location stayed in operation until 2000 when we combined the two stores back into the Fayetteville location.
In March of 1997, we took over the entire area at 2631 1/2 Raeford Road and opened a houseware's division.
There are presently no plans for further expansion but who knows what's around the corner?
We continue the process of striving to maintain a clean and well organized atmosphere where folks can sell those better quality items that would meet an untimely and much less profitable end at a yard sale and where budget-minded individuals can get a good bargain.
We hope one day the name "SACKS" will be as respected as sliced bread!
